If your dog gets heartworm, they will have to undergo aggressive treatment that will be very painful and will have to be seperated from contact with other animals and humans. It is a lot easier to prevent than it is to treat. Q. In other words, if they were exposed about a month ago, can we start heart worm prevention without the expensive treatment, or is it too late. It's fine to start preventative now but vets won't give until they have done a simple inexpensive blood test to ensure pet doesn't have adult heart worms. It takes about 6 mos from being bitten til the heart worm mature enough to be detected with current testing which is why most vets don't bother testing pups under 5,6 mo.
