Preventive medicine or preventive care refers to measures taken to prevent diseases, (or injuries) rather than curing them or treating their symptoms. The term contrasts in method with curative and palliative medicine, and in scope with public health methods (which work at the level of population health rather than individual health). LevelsThis takes place at primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary prevention levels. Level Definition Primary prevention avoids the development of a disease. Most population-based health promotion activities are primary preventive measures. Secondary prevention activities are aimed at early disease detection, thereby increasing opportunities for interventions to prevent progression of the disease and emergence of symptoms. Tertiary prevention reduces the negative impact of an already established disease by restoring function and reducing disease-related complications. Quaternary prevention is the set of health activities that mitigate or avoid the consequences of unnecessary or excessive interventions in the health system.Simple examples of preventive medicine include hand washing and immunizations. Preventive care may include examinations and screening tests tailored to an individual's age, health, and family history. For example, a person with a family history of certain cancers or other diseases would begin screening at an earlier age and/or more frequently than those with no family history. On the other side of preventive medicine, some non-profit organizations, such as the Northern California Cancer Center, apply epidemiological research towards finding ways to prevent diseases. GNU Free Documentation License What is the study of Preventive Medicine? Q. I don t understand why a resident would go into the study, when a patient (or future patient I think) would go see a physician (because of it), or what it is in the medical field really. Asked by Jose M - Wed Jun 27 09:56:47 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's almost all research based. It mostly investigates the causes of diseases and early detection of diseases. Some products of preventative medicine include: early intervention programs to counsel high risk patients on STDs, mammogram screening for early cancer dectection reducing chance for late stage cancer onset, blood tests monitoring normal ranges for various substances in your blood. Preventative medicine exists in all medical fields, but grew to a point where a new field has emerged specifically dealing with preventing diseases. Sorry, there is no preventative vaccine for this viral infection, here in the U.S. or anywhere else...just as there is no specific treatment. It has to run its course and is treated symptomatically. Some things have been tried in the past for treating it, such as chloroquine, but with very limited success. Best that can be done is to treat the symptoms: rest, NSAIDS (non-steroid anti-inflamatory drugs) such as ibuprofen for fever and joint pain, and mild exercise for stiffness. Sometimes, doctors will order paracetamol to combat the fever and joint pain. Chikungunya usually starts suddenly and the symptoms are: fever chills headache nausea vomiting joint pain rash The best thing to do is to take measures to avoid contracting it by… [cont.] Answered by ilse72 - Sun Jul 22 03:58:32 2007 Overmedication: Are people relying too much on medicine?
Q. Do you think people today are relying too much on medicine? And please tell me why you think so. I'm not sure if supplements or preventive medicine should be included as medicine. I think supplements have been popular and it might be a good idea to take them to help your body stay healthy. What problem might relying too much on medicine cause? Are you a person who easily takes any medicine when you just have a cold? Or are you a person who tries not to depend on any medicine but rather depend on something else, such as the alternative medicine? Any answer or opinin is appreciated. Please tell me what you think about this issue. Thank you. Asked by akkochant1 - Sat Aug 26 08:33:45 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. People trust doctors, and doctors have been trained to treat illnesses with medication for short term, and/or long term basis. This system has been carefully crafted by pharmaceutical companies to insure their own success, and they are very, very successful. In the early 1900s, pharmaceutical companies started the practice of funding medical colleges that taught the practice of allopathy, treatment of illness with medicines. They also coerced colleges to remove courses like homeopathy and other holistic treatments or the P. companies would remove their lucrative funding. Thus we have a medical system that has a first approach of prescribing drugs. In my opinion it should be a last approach. I understand that medical doctors are not… [cont.] Answered by whitewolfpfv - Sat Aug 26 09:02:43 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Preventive medicine" Officials searching for woman who dropped off rabid cat at Fort Hood - Austin American-Statesman (blog)
